Three days before this writing, China celebrated the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II with their China Victory Day Parade. This was an opportunity for China to showcase their improving military strength to complement their domestic achievements, certainly over the past eighty years, but especially during the past quarter-century.
I spent twelve years living and working in China, and Nan grew up there. So we both have well-formed opinions about the Chinese people, their culture, language, cuisine, government, and so many other aspects of their lives. While recent events like this week's parade have opened the eyes of more people in the West, there is so much more to explore about this ancient land and people: art, architecture, music, and philosophy. Figuratively, one could spend a lifetime just wading in the shallows of the mighty Chinese civilization.
Here at Emelessence, we will occasionally share experiences and insights into current events or new developments that warrant a deeper look. Unlike too many foreigners, we love China. We are enthusiastically upbeat about the nation's future prospects, and optimistic about China's relations with the rest of the world.
